The English Language Olympiad: Writing


The purpose of the writing contest is to check:

1) the skills of adequate written self-expression in the English language;

2) the ability to construct texts in accordance with their communicative purposes and general genre features.

It is suggested that this type of contest include two types of writing tasks specified below.


Type 1 – an argumentative essay


The participants of the Olympiad will receive a task of writing a 200-250 word essay on a topic of general interest and importance. Fifteen topics will be prepared and divided into five sets (approximately corresponding to the number of classrooms, where the contest will take place). The participants will have a right to choose one of the three topics offered in their classroom.


Evaluation criteria for task type 1 are as follows: 1) quality of the argument development and paragraph structuring of the text; 3) appropriateness of the chosen stylistic register; 3) correctness of grammatical constructions, spelling and punctuation.


^ Type 2 – producing a text based on a predetermined structure


The participants of the Olympiad will receive a task of writing a 150-200 word text of a certain type/genre (e.g., a reference letter, a review, a leaflet) strictly following the provided guidelines, related to the logical and formal structuring of the text and (partially) to its wording. Fifteen tasks will be prepared and divided into five sets (approximately corresponding to the number of classrooms, where the contest will take place). The participants will have a right to choose one of the three tasks offered in their classroom.


Evaluation criteria for task type 2are as follows: 1) correspondence to the suggested guidelines; 2) quality of the logical and formal text development within the guidelines; 3) appropriateness of the chosen stylistic register; 3) correctness of grammatical constructions, spelling and punctuation.


Time: 2 hours for both tasks
