ABSTRACT

A "Basics of Precision Agriculture" course for Agronomists (Specialists Degree) has been adapted from current AgrowKnowledge courses to create a uniform introductory module in precision agriculture. This curriculum is a result of collaborative effort between the Agronomy Faculty of Dnipropetrovsk State Agrarian University (DSAU) and AgrowKnowledge, the US National Science Foundation (NSF) National Center for Agriscience and Technology Education. AgrowKnowledge partners with many institutions and organizations in its effort to develop math, science, and technology education programs in agriculture for use in the United States and abroad. Several AgrowKnowledge community college partners currently teach courses based on precision agriculture curriculum materials developed by previous NSF grants. Although these materials are available, there is need for a uniform introductory course module that can be used by schools in the United States, Ukraine and other countries. Uses of GPS/GIS technologies are being researched and curriculum integration is beginning at the DSAU. The focus is on principles of technology and agronomy that are common between two countries, providing specific technology skills needed by industry. The introductory module brings attention to similarities and differences between the US and Ukraine as an example of other countries. It consists of 21 hours each of lectures and hands-on practice, plus 4 hours of-class activities. The teacher’s supplement includes learning objectives, student background requirements, detailed description of activities, student/teacher notes and assessment tools that can be uniformly applied by the Ukraine and US. Collaborative activities were possible by an NSF grant for development and initial validation of this precision agriculture module.
