for foreigners and individuals without citizenship

who enter on the basis of general secondary education according to the Chapter XVII of Entrance Rules to the State Higher Educational Establishment

Explanatory Note

The programme of the introductory interview in the English language for foreigners and individuals without citizenship consists of three parts:

1) the contents of communicative competence;

2) criteria for evaluation the introductory examination;

3) the list of recommended educational sources.

Material in the programme is selected with the goals and objectives that determine the general and professionally oriented levels of mastering the communicative competence of foreign university entrants.

Foreigners and individuals without citizenship must possess the following basic types of language activities:

1) reading;

2) listening comprehension;

3) speaking (monologue, dialogue);

4) writing.

During the interview in the English language foreigners and individuals without citizenship must understand the information contained in the text and be able to convey its main contents fully or briefly.

Foreigners and individuals without citizenship must be able to understand the text and to use text information for a specific task while listening to it.

In reproductive speaking foreigners and individuals without citizenship must be able to reproduce text read or listened to consistently and in an adequate form , in productive speaking he (she) must be able to create his ( her ) own text according to the patterns of the modern official English language. In dialogue speaking foreigners and individuals without citizenship must be able to conduct a dialogue conversation.

As for writing , foreigners and individuals without citizenship must be able to reproduce the text, using appropriate language patterns, following the logic of the material provided.

Sufficient level of mastering in these kinds of communicative activity allows foreigners and individuals without citizenship o study at universities and colleges of Ukraine at various levels of accreditation.

^ Contents of Communicative Competence

For a successful interview foreigners and individuals without citizenship must be guided by the following requirements of mastering the major types of speech activities:

  1. Reading

Foreigners and individuals without citizenship must be able to understand the main idea of the text, certain facts and connections between them while reading it.

Adapted texts of the descriptive and narrative type as well as non-adapted scientific and popular scientific texts on general topics are offered at the interview.

The level of skills formation depends on the ability to use different strategies depending on the communication settings ( interrogative, narrative, exclamatory and negative intonation).

  1. ^ Listening Comprehension

Foreigners and individuals without citizenship must be able to understand the main content of the text as well as its details, separate facts and the relations between them in monologues, dialogues and monologically-dialogical expressions.

Monological texts of the explanatory type with elements of description, topics in speciality and adapted texts-messages on medical topics are offered at the interview.

The degree of understanding of the listening comprehension text is checked with a help of questions to the text and the oral reproduction of the information received.

  1. Monologue speaking

Foreigners and individuals without citizenship must be able to reproduce the contents of the text both by the way of reading and listening to it, to evaluate it, to draw conclusions and summarize the received information. He (she) must be able to make his (her) own message on the given topic. The following topics are offered for defining the level of oral monological speaking:

  • About Myself. Biography (childhood, education). Family. Hobbies.

  • Lifestyle (work, leisure time and activities, socializing with friends or collegues).

  • My Motherland (geography, economy, culture). The Capital City of My Country.

  • My Hometown. Problems of the Modern City. Life in the City and in the Countryside: advantages and disadvantages.

  • Outstanding People in the History and Science of My Country.

  • Nature. Nature and the Human Being. Ecology.

Dialogue speaking

Foreigners and individuals without citizenship must be able to take part in a dialogue on everyday and scientific topics using different types of dialogues: questioning dialogues, dialogues based on exchanging the ideas, dialogues based on exchanging the experience, conversational dialogues.

The following topics for defining the level of oral speech are offered:

  • ^ At the deanery: to be able to greet; to give brief information about yourself; to explain the purpose of a visit; to write an application form; to ask for a note to show at the embassy; to talk about personal problems; to thank; to say goodbye.

  • On the street: to be able to ask about the location of the object needed; to explain a taxi driver or a bus driver the route (the aim of a trip); to navigate the names of streets and squares, road signs and announcements.

  • In transport: to be able to ask about the public transport fare; to be able to ask other passengers to pass the fare to the driver; to understand the announcements of bus stops; to find out the information about the bus stop needed; to ask for the permission to pass to the exit.

  • At the library: to be able to greet; to show the librarian the admission card; to ask for the necessary textbook (book, periodical); to understand the librarian’s request to confirm the service; to thank; to say goodbye.

  • ^ At the clinic (at thedoctor’s, at the pharmacy): a) at the reception desk: to be able to find and read the sign “Reception”; tobe able to make any enquiries at the reception desk; to register one’s medical insurance card; toget an appointment with a doctor. b) at the doctor’s: to be able to greet; to inform the doctor about one’s chronic diseases, personal allergic reactions, previous surgeries; to understand the doctor’s commands while being examined; to understand the doctor’s instructions as for the treatment prescribed; to thank; to say goodbye; to buy medicines at the pharmacy.

  • In the store (at the cafe, in the canteen, at the market): to be able to start the conversation with the seller questioning on the availability of any item (product); to ask about the price; to inquire for the desired item (product); to find out the weight of the item (product) , stock available; to pay for the purchase; to thank.

  • At the bank: to find the right window to get information, to get to know how to open an account; to make inquiries about the account statement, to fill in the form , to understand an operator’s explanation; to get money from an ATM; to thank for the information received.

  • In the booking-office at the railway station (airport): to be able to read information about the flights, train (plane,bus) departure and arrival time; to know how to book or buy a ticket; to find out the possibility of ticket refund; to understand the rules of filling in papers on leaving or arrival at the place of destination , to understand radio announcements.

  • ^ At the theater (cinema): to read bills, to make inquiries about available performance (movie) tickets, to ask for a place in the particular row or section of the hall (orchestra, balcony) ; to understand cashier’s questions and answers; to check the accuracy of the information printed on the ticket; to thank.

  • ^ To guest away: to be able to greet; to get acquainted with; to provide strangers with some information about yourself; to express your approval as for the apartment interior , hosts” looks, food or drinks served; to be able to maintain a conversation with the host , hostess and other guests present; to thank for hospitality.

The level of skills formation is defined by the ability to create the entrant’s own statement on the given topic as well as by the ability to solve standard situations of the social sphere of communication.

  1. Writing

Foreigners and individuals without citizenship entrant must be able to make notes on the main content of the message, that is perceived orally, following the norms of modern English grammar and vocabulary.


^ The Criteria of Evaluation of the Interview in the English Language for Foreigners and Individuals without Citizenship


The level of knowledge is considered to be sufficient (1 point) if a foreigner or an individual without citizenship adequately understands the information contained in the text and can convey fully or briefly its main contents fully or briefly; comprehends the text heard and can use text information for specific tasks; consistently and adequately reproduces the main idea of the text , participates in a dialogue, reproduces the given text in writing using appropriate language patterns, following the logic of the material provided.

The level of knowledge is considered to be insufficient (0 points) if a foreigner or an individual without citizenship is showing ignorance in lexical minimum, cannot reproduce the information heard in writing, is not able to realize the communicative needs in socializing , does not understand the information provided in the text read or listened to, can not use it for specific tasks , does not participate in a dialogue.
