The Ninth EU Info-Day: «Migration and Integration of Migrants in Europe and Russia: Similar and Different Trends»

The EU Info Day is dedicated to the International Conference “Migration and Integration in Europe and Russia: New Challenges and Opportunities” held on November 16-18, 2012, in St. Petersburg. The EU Info Day is organized by the EU Centre-Centre for European Studies of the European University at St. Petersburg with the support of the Press-Club «Green Lamp».


The discussion will be oriented on the understanding of the main trends and problems of the migration and integration of migrants in different countries of Europe and Russia including a special case of St. Petersburg. It will provide also an insight into the regulation of migration between the European Union and Russia.

The following issues will be addressed during the discussion:

  • What are the main trends in contemporary migration in Europe and in Russia? What are the reasons and the consequences of these trends?

  • What models are applied in different European countries and Russia for the integration of migrants?

  • Can the European experiences be helpful for Russia and St. Petersburg?

  • What is the role of migration regulation in the EU-Russian relations? Prospects and opportunities for the visa-free regime and between the European Union and Russia

Background Information: the European Union Centre was established in St. Petersburg on December 1st 2010, on the basis of the Centre for European Studies of the European University at St. Petersburg existed since 2003. In such a way the Centre became the first EU Centre in Russia and 27th member of the international network of the EU centers. On of the aims of the EU centre project is connected with the bringing of the information about the EU, its work and cooperation with Russia to the very different social groups of the North-Western regions of Russia (http://www.eu.spb.ru/ces).


Six times a year, with the support of the Press-Club «Green Lamp» the EU Centre organizes EU Info-Days. The idea of the EU Info-Days is connected with the goal of the dissemination of the information and ideas on the EU to the broader public. It is done first o all through the contacts and discussion with the St. Petersburg journalists on various issues of the EU-Russian cooperation.


The international interdisciplinary conference “^ Migration and Integration in Europe and Russia: New Challenges and Opportunities” will reflect new challenges and opportunities migratory systems are facing in the contemporary world both in Russia and European countries. Movement and mobility are important to the functioning of contemporary societies. At the same time, intensive migrations produce new challenges for the national states stimulating debates and policies of integration of migrants. The Conference provides an international and cross-disciplinary space to explore these issues.

About 80 conference participants will come from 17 different countries: Belarus, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Israel, Poland, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, Hungary, Ukraine, and United Kingdom. Even though most of the participants are from the host country, they come from 11 different cities of the Russian Federation.
