LEARNING MATERIALS

Access (Connection) to the Internet

Internet users usually get an access to information resources of the Internet through the ISPs (Internet Service Provider - ISP). Service providers are conventionally divided into following ranks: local, regional, national and global. Local providers connected to larger ISPs. ISP usually has high-speed links to Internet and provide following standard services for his users [4]:

 different types of connections to the Internet (i.e. "dial-up", direct connection with using optical cable, etc.);

 static (permanent) or dynamic (per connection) IP-address assigning for the user computer;

 access to common Internet services such as WWW, email, FTP, etc.

 different levels of support.

One of the main characteristics of a network channel is bandwidth (the maximum amount of data (measured in bits) that can be transmitted per second using this channel. Bandwidth is usually measured in bits/sec (b/s), Kilobits/sec (Kb/s) or Megabits/sec (Mb/s).

Network communication channel is usually connected to the computer via modem [6,8] or via network adapter. The modem (modulator/demodulator) converts the digital bit stream from a computer to a signal suitable for transmission over the communication channel and vice versa signal from communication channel is converted by the modem to information stream.

Installation of browser

MS Windows OS has build-in software browser the Microsoft Internet Explorer. Also users MS Windows may install any other compatible browser (Chrome, Opera, Firefox, etc.).

Installation of software process of integration of a software to the operation system (registering in system files (i.e. registry-files), copying software files to hard-drive of PC, etc).

The Installation algorithm of new version of a web browser:

  1. Unpack the file archive of new version of a browser to some folder on your hard-drive.

  2. Remove previous version of browser from “Installation and removing of software” window.

  3. Run installation program (“setup.exe” or “install.exe”) of new web-browser version.

  4. Use installation wizard for configuring web browser parameters.

  5. Reboot workstation to complete installation.

Configuration parameters (user interface settings, home page, connection settings, security settings, user notification, etc.) can be changed after web-browser installation.

^ Configuration of Internet Explorer

Configuration of Internet Explorer are available in “Internet Options” dialog window. This window can be opened in several ways. For example, select "Tools–>Internet Options" from the menu. Another way: click on the "Start" button, select "Settings" then - "Control Panel". In the window that opens, find the "Internet Options" icon and open it.

“Internet Options” window has the next tabs (Fig. 6.1): “General”, “Security”, "Privacy”, “Content”, “Connections”, “Programs”, “Advanced”. General configuration settings of your browser configured in "General" and "Advanced" tabs. For changing Internet connection settings can be used “Connections” tab and for changing settings of used Internet-applications can be used “Programs” tab. For configuring access restriction to some Web-pages can be used "Content" tab. “Security" can be used for set security level for different Internet zones.

General” tab

On "General" tab (see fig. 6.1) you can change next settings of your browser:

1. "Home page" - the initial Web-site (you can use different modes: use current, use default, use blank or set address manually).

2. "Temporary Internet files - the folder with temporary files, HTML-viewed Web-pages. Pages copied into a separate folder on your hard drive to accelerate next reviewing of stored pages. When you open Web-page the browser checks the server for Web-pages changes. If no changes, this page is loaded from the folder "Temporary Internet Files". If Web-page changed it will be loaded from the server. With using "Remove files ...” you can delete files from this folder. For changing temporary files folder capacity or location can be used "Settings ..." button.

3. "History" – can be used for storing history about previously loaded Web-pages. The "Delete" button can be used for clear history.

«Advanced» tab

At “Advanced” tab (of “Internet Options” dialog) you can change (or select by default) different browser settings. For example:

  • “Java VM” – using Java-compiler, Java-log, etc;

  • “Security” – using network security protocols, notifications, storing and removing files in “Temporary Internet Files” folder;

  • “Multimedia” – loading of images, playing sounds, video, animation;

  • “HTTP settings” – using HTTP protocol;

  • “Browsing” – using UTF-8, etc;

  • “Printing” – printing of background images;

  • “Searching from address bar” – using searching from address bar.

Internet Explorer can use UTF-8 for transferring URLs with non-Latin symbols to web-server. URL address can be coded with using UTF-8. For using in URL non-Latin symbols you can set “Send URL as UTF-8” in “Browsing” group.

You can use security protocols (such as SSL and PCT) for perform protected transactions through Internet. For example SSL can be used for safety shopping throw Internet.

Security” tab

On "Security" tab of “Internet Options” dialog (Fig. 6.2) you can choose:

  • zones or Internet sites to provide security settings;

  • the level of security for the selected area.

Figure 6.2 – “Security” tab of “Internet Options” and “Security settings” window

Browser Internet Explorer includes four levels of security:

– High;
– Medium;

– Below medium;

– Low.

Security level can be changed at “Security settings” window (Fig. 6.2) – you can open it with using “Custom Level…” button.

The “High” level of security is recommended to all users. In this case the browser will avoid viewing potentially harmful content and issue warnings. Also you can use unsafe browser features (Java, JavaScript, ActiveX, etc). As a result, will be reduced review functionality. The high level of security necessary to choose sites that may have dangerous content.

The “Low” level provides minimal security. In this case, much of the browser content to download and run without warning. This level of security used for browsing trusted sites.

When viewing a secure site page Internet Explorer displays a lock icon in the status bar.

Content” tab

"Content" tab (Fig. 6.3) can be used for changing following settings:

  • “Content Advisor” – limited access to information in the Internet;

  • “Certificates” – certificate of clients and publishers authenticity;

  • “Personal data” – personal data that is used to online purchase.

To restrict access to information in the Internet, which is unacceptable for children, the Internet Explorer uses a RSACi system. This system use five levels (0, 1, 2, 3, 4) in four categories (violence, language, nudity, sex) for information classification. You can set access limitation settings in “Content Advisor” window (Fig. 6.3). You can use “Settings” button for opening this window (with using password).

There are two different types of certificates, personal and for Web-site. Personal certificate is used when sending personal information to the server, which verifies the client. For example, personal certificate would contain information with name and password. Certificate of Web-site used when the browser sends a certificate to provide information about security of the server.

Connections” tab

On the “Connections” tab (fig. 6.4) of the “Internet Options” window you can modify following settings:

  • “Setup” – for activating Internet connection wizard;

  • “Dial-up and Virtual Private Network settings” – settings of dial-up and VPN connection;

  • “LAN Settings” – settings of Internet connection via LAN.

To configure your browser when your PC connected to Internet via LAN (with using “LAN Settings” windows - fig. 6.5), you must press "LAN Settings..." button. To access the Internet through a proxy server you need to mark "Use proxy server" and enter the address and port of proxy server. Server type is selected using the "Advanced" button in the "Proxy Settings" dialog (fig. 6.5).

Programs” tab

"Programs" tab can be used for changing programs, which will automatically opens for editing HTML-files, opening email, etc. (fig. 6.4).
