INTRODUCTION

1. Personal computer

Computers are electronic machines which can accept data in a certain form, process the data and give the results of the processing in a specified format as information. Three basic steps are involved in the process: first, data is fed into the computer’s memory. Then, when the program is run, the computer performs a set of instructions and processes the data. Finally, we can see the results (the output) on the screen or in printed form.

Electronic and mechanical parts that make up a computer system are called hardware. A standard computer system (PC) consists of the following main sections: chassis or tower (a metal frame on which electronic components are mounted), monitor, mouse, keyboard.

The main functional parts of the personal computer are placed in chassis. These parts are: central processing unit (CPU), computer memory, motherboard; hard drives and floppy drives, video card, sound card.

Input devices enable data to go into the computer’s memory. The most common input devices are the keyboard and mouse. These two input devices are obviously needed, otherwise one can't interact with the computer system.

Output devices enable us to extract the finished product from the system. For example, the computer shows the output on the monitor or prints the result on paper by means of a printer. Monitor displays operating system environment, online documents, files and folders, and various applications you use to get your work done.

Data storage devices enable us to store data to computer hard drive or store it on other media. Modern data storage devices are floppy disks, CD, DVD, flash drives, external hard drives.

Software. Information in the form of data and programs is known as software. An operating system (OS) is program that manages the resources of the computer. It runs programs and provides them with access to memory (RAM), input/output devices, file system, and other services.
