2011 Earnings: First Quarter

Strong sales to businesses continued to prop up Dell’s earnings in the first quarter despite a weak economy and still-sluggish demand from consumers.

Dell’s report on May 18, 2011, came on the heels of earnings from Hewlett-Packard, which earlier in the day lowered its forecast for the year on weak personal computer sales, trouble in its services division and the impact of the Japanese earthquake in March.

For Dell, sales of servers, computers and storage devices to businesses continued to help it offset weaknesses that have plagued its consumer business the last few years. The company reported net income nearly tripled to $945 million, or 49 cents a share, from $341 million, or 17 cents a share.

Revenue rose 1 percent to $15 billion.

Analysts had forecast earnings of 43 cents a share, on average, on $15.4 billion in revenue for the first quarter.

Background

Dell is a computer company founded in 1984 by Michael S. Dell, whose success made him one of the wealthiest men in Texas. From its inception, the "Dell model" became synonymous with efficiency, outsourcing and tight inventories. However, in recent years the company has been plagued by serious problems, including misreading the desires of its customers, poor customer service, suspect product quality and improper accounting.

In June 2010, documents unsealed in a three-year-old lawsuit against Dell showed that the company's employees were aware that millions of its desktop personal computers sold from 2003 to 2005 were likely to break down. A later filing asserted that Dell had concealed evidence by providing only a snippet of the communications among top executives about the faulty computer problems.

Since face-to-face interviews were not possible due to distance (i.e., the interviewer

was in Hawai‘i and the interviewees were in Korea), an Internet chat tool, MSN

Messenger, was used as a medium for the interviews. Both the interviewer and the

interviewees were very comfortable with MSN Messenger; they used Messenger for

everyday conversations at work as well as at home and were able to type fast enough to conduct the interviews through chatting. The interviewer met the interviewees on the Internet through MSN Messenger, and the interviews were conducted using the chat tool.

The interview procedures were not considered different from face-to-face interviews

except that they were conducted through written communication. Each interviewee was interviewed individually, and there were, in total, five interview sessions. An interview took about one-and-a-half hours on average. All of the interviews were conducted in Korean, which is the first language of both the interviewer and the interviewees.

Based on the interview results, the questionnaire was developed and pilot tested with

Korean business professionals and non-business native speakers of Korean as mentioned above. In order to administer the questionnaire in eight different companies, one businessman from each company was contacted by the researcher. The researcher explained the purpose of the survey as well as the process of distributing, completing, and collecting the questionnaires.

Dell is also becoming a victim of its size. Maintaining 18 percent annual revenue growth is a challenge for any company. But it's a particular challenge for a company that A) has an annual revenue base of $49 billion; and B) sells products whose prices fall significantly each year. To increase sales by 15 percent, Coca-Cola has to sell 15 percent more cases. To increase its PC revenues by 15 percent, Dell probably has to increase unit sales by 25 percent. As Business Week noted, "about 79% of Dell's $49 billion in sales last year came from desktops and notebook computers, both categories in which prices are falling." Dell is trying to cope with the continual decline in prices and to goose revenue growth by investing more in the production and sales of flat-screen televisions, monitors, and printers. But the price competition in these new lines of business is just as bitter as it is in PCs.

Dell also has to rely increasingly on new markets, which is proving tricky. The techniques that allowed it to dominate the U.S. market don't necessarily travel well. The Financial Times reported that in China, a crucial market for Dell's future, the cultural and economic infrastructure for direct-to-consumer marketing doesn't exist. "The strongest evidence that Dell's model is not yet matched to the China market is the appearance of numerous unofficial 'agents' who buy its computers and sell them on for a profit," the FT notes.

The Royal Bank of Scotland says it will vigorously defend itself against US government claims it misrepresented the quality of mortgages it sold. The US Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) has filed lawsuits against 17 banks, including RBS, Barclays and HSBC, over mortgage-based investments. Values plunged during the financial crisis and a bailout of mortgage firms cost US taxpayers billions of dollars.

RBS says it has "substantial" legal and factual defences to the US claims. A spokesman said: "We believe we have substantial and credible legal and factual defences to these claims and will defend them vigorously." HSBC and Barclays declined to comment to the BBC on the legal action.

'Improper actions'

Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Deutsche Bank, Nomura, Citigroup, and Societe Generale are among the other banks facing legal action from the FHFA. BBC business correspondent Joe Lynam says it is believed the financial institutions are being sued for a sum in the tens of billions.

The FHFA said in a statement that there had been "improper actions by the firms and individuals".

"Based on our review, FHFA alleges that the loans had different and more risky characteristics than the descriptions contained in the marketing and sales materials provided to the Enterprises for those securities," the statement said.

The FHFA oversees mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which act as guarantor for most home loans in the US. The two firms lost more than $30bn (£18.5bn), partly because of their investments in sub-prime mortgages, and were bailed out by the US government. Since the rescues, US taxpayers have spent more than $140bn to keep the firms afloat. Alistair Heath of the financial newspaper City AM told the BBC the importance of the FHFA's lawsuits against the financial institutions should not be downplayed. "Regardless of the validity or otherwise of these allegations, a lot of these big banks are likely to end up paying billions of dollars in compensation to the US government. "So it'll be quite a costly settlement at best for these firms and it comes at quite a difficult time for the banking industry."

Major banks are already negotiating with the attorneys general of all 50 states to settle mortgage abuse claims. The banks were looking for a comprehensive deal that would protect them from future litigation. But the FHFA's action may complicate attempts to reach a deal with the states.

Some finance experts have said that the plan by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to kick-off its cashless society pilot scheme in Lagos State might not be easy as it could slow down business activities in the state. According to them, one of the major challenges of the policy was that people would be discouraged from depositing money in the banks because of problems of adaptation.

They however, said that although some businessmen who used large volume of cash for business transaction might adopt a ‘wait and see’ attitude, they would in future return their money gradually back to the banks after the policy has stabilised.

Commenting on the plan of CBN to test-run its cash transaction limit policy in Lagos, managing director of H.J Trust and Investment, Mr. Harison Owoh, said that though the state was the financial hub centre of the country, there was need for the apex bank to give further explanation regarding the issue of cumulative individual’s daily withdrawal of N150,000. He said that the CBN was expected to educate people on the policy before test-running it in the state.

Insisting that there was need for the apex bank to enlighten people on the individual cash limit cumulative withdrawal policy, he said “a situation where Mr A is owing three people N150,000 each and he decided to issue different cheques of the same amount to them, will bank honour the three cheques or will it accept one and reject others.” He further stated that despite the fact that it would be difficult for people to accept change, the adoption of cashless society in Lagos State to some extent would reduce high rate of crime in the system.
