Final goals of study:


  • To be able to interpret theoretic basis and modern principles of public health organization

  • To determine and analyze basic indicators of community health condition together wit the factors which influence it.

  • To work out measures aimed at improvement of population health

  • To estimate organization aspect, quality aspect and efficacy aspect of health care providers (different types of hospital, polyclinics, sanitary and epidemiologic stations) in terms of public health reformation.

  • To understand and apply correctly the conception of disability, to differentiate its types and to know how to organize the disability examination.

  • To know what to do concerning different situations of disability cases

  • To understand and apply correctly principles and conceptions of management

  • To work out managerial decisions aimed at improvement of work of basic health care providers.

The content of module 1.

Introduction into social medicine and public health organization


  1. Social medicine and public health organization as science. Basic methods of social medicine. The history of social medicine development.

  2. The contribution of outstanding scientists and doctors in the development of Ukrainian health care.

  3. The conceptions of social medicine.

  4. The targeted approach in defining the “health”. Individual and community health.

  5. The medical indicators of population health condition.

  6. The most influential factors concerning public health and peculiarities of study of these factors and their influence.

  7. Classification of risk factors that influence people’s health.

  8. Application of biostatistic methods for evaluation of public health condition and influencing factors (relative and average measures, rates-adjustment, parametric tests of significance of obtained results, study of dynamic of a phenomenon, correlation and regression analysis, etc).

Medical and social aspects of demography.
Methodology of demographic indicators study.



  1. Demography as science. The role of demography data in characteristic of population health. Change of population number and content in various regions of the world, including Ukraine over the recent time.

  2. Methodology of study of natural population movement; sources of information; calculation of indicators.

  3. Birth rate and its values in Ukraine. Factors that influence the birth rate.

  4. Mortality rates. Calculation of total crude mortality rates and specified mortality rates. Peculiarities and causes of death in different social groups. The dynamic of mortality rates in Ukraine and other countries of the word.

  5. Infant mortality; age peculiarities. The most important groups of factors that influence the infant mortality rates. Medical and social aspects of decrease of infant mortality rates.

  6. Still births. The conception and calculation of perinatal mortality rates.

  7. Average life expectancy: the definition. Tendencies in dynamic of average life expectancy overt the world, particularly in Ukraine.

  8. The characteristic of natural movement by region of Ukraine. What measures may be used to improve the demographic condition of Ukraine.

Medical and social aspects of morbidity.

Methodology of study of morbidity.


  1. The conception of morbidity and the goals of its study. Medical and social significance of morbidity.

  2. What methods may be used in study of morbidity and their advantages and disadvantages. Factors that influence the data on morbidity of urban and rural population.

  3. International Disease Classification and how to use it.

  4. Methodology of population morbidity study by appealability for medical aid. Types of morbidity and their comparative characteristic.

  5. The total crude morbidity: sources of data, registration documents and how they should be filled, indicators. The dynamic of total crude morbidity in Ukraine and its leading causes.

  6. Infectious diseases morbidity: the appropriateness of special registration, the unit of observation, registration documents and their “course”, basic indicators. Tendencies of this type of morbidity.

  7. The most important non-epidemic diseases morbidity: the list of disease related to this category, the appropriateness of special registration, the unit of observation, registration documents and their “course”, indicators of primary specified morbidity and disease prevalence. The dynamic of cardiovascular and malignant diseases spreading.

  8. Medical and social role of the most important disease: cardiovascular diseases, malignant diseases, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS.

  1. Public health care in Ukraine; principles of Ukrainian public health care.

  2. Branches of public health care. Basic organizational principles of Ukrainian health care system. The conception of primary, secondary and tertiary medical care. Health care providers and their structure.

  3. The polyclinic (ambulatoria): structure, the purpose, organization of work.

  4. Doctor’s district and how it is formed.

  5. The duties of registration office (unit) of polyclinic

  6. Advantages and disadvantages of district-approach method in medical care provision

  7. The duties of district physician

  8. Disease preventive work of polyclinic. Dispensarization: the conception, stages and criteria of efficacy.

  9. Dispensarization: principles of population selection for further dispensary observation.

  10. Anti-epidemic work activity of polyclinic. Collaboration with sanitary-and-epidemiologic stations.   4. Women’s consulting health center: structure, duties, indicators used for estimation of its work. The role of women’s consulting health center in antenatal care after the fetus and its collaboration with pediatric polyclinic and sanitary-and-epidemiologic station.
