I want to describe my working day. On weekdays my working day begins early in the morning. I usually get up at about 7 o’clock in the morning. Then I do my morning exercises and go to the bathroom to wash my face and hands and clean my teeth. I don’t take a shower in the morning. I generally do it late in the evening before going to bed. At a quarter past seven I am ready to have my breakfast. As a rule, I have a quick light breakfast which consist of a cup of coffee or tea and cheese or sausage sandwich. After breakfast I leave for work. I live far from my office so it taken me half an hour to get there by trolley-bus. My working day begins at 9 o’clock and ends at 6 o’clock in the evening.
After work, I usually do some shopping on my way home. I come back home at 7 o’clock in the evening or even later. I prepare my supper, wash up, clean my room. In the evening I watch TV or read books.
This is my usual working day. Weekends are more attractive.
Spring, summer, autumn and winter are the four seasons. March, April and May are the spring months; June, July and August are the summer months; September, October and November are the autumn months; December, January and February are the winter months.
When winter sets in the days are short and the night are long. It is often cold and sometimes it freezes hard. Cold winds flow from the North. It often snows. The temperature is below zero. There is much snow on the roads. The water freezes in the rivers and labes. It’s often windy and frosty. But some people are fond of winter. They like to ski and skate.
In spring it gets warm. The temperature rises. The trees begin to bud, the flowers begin to bloom. The gardens are full of flowers. It sometimes rains heavily, but spring rains are warm and pleasant.
In summer it is very warm and sometimes even hot. On some days the temperature rises to 30 degrees above zero Centigrade. In summer we often go to the river. There we swim, bathe, and play games.
At the beginning of autumn it is still warm. But then it gets cool. The leaves on the trees turn red and yellow. At the end of autumn it gets dark rather early. The weather is often unpleasant. It often drizzles and it’s foggy.
- How do you find the climate in Kyiv?
- Oh, I like it very much. It’s rather warm, dry and sunny. Do you always have such weather here?
- Unfortunately not. Last summer was awful. It rained all the time. We seldom had a spell of dry and sunny weather. But September was fine.
- And what’s the weather like in Kyiv in winter?
- It’s not usually very cold, though sometimes the temperature in Kyiv is minus 100 – minus 120.
Role – play the following situations:
Read the text. Which of the customs described here do you find interesting and worth following?
Some of the English customs are strange. People in England do not shake hands as much as people do in Europe. Men raise their hats to women but not to each other. When you go to a friend’s house for a dinner, it’s not the custom to say “Thank you” at the end of the dinner as in our country. There you wait until you are leaving to go home and then you say “Thank you for inviting me”. Very few people have servants in their homes. It is very difficult to get servants, and servants wages are high, so the men help their wives in many ways.
Sunday is a very quiet day in London. All the shops are not open and so are the theatres and most of the cinemas. Londoners like to get out of town on Sundays. They often go down to the sea for the day. There are very few outdoor cafes in London. That’s because the weather changes so often and so quickly. The sun may shine one minute and then a few minutes later it may rain.
Foreigners sometimes get a little tired of English cooking, and they go to Soho. Soho is a part of London where there are all sorts of restaurants: French, Italian, Greek, Spanish, Italian and many others.
People have different hobbies. Some of them are fold of music, others prefer to collect old coins or stamps, the third are fond of painting.
As for me, I like to go to the theatre. I prefer to go to the drama theatre. I like to see Russian, Ukrainian and foreign plays. I saw a lot of plays in Kyiv’s Russian and Ukrainian Drama Theatres.
In the Ukrainian Drama theatre I saw dramas by Gogol, Bulgakov, Franko and others.
In the Russian Drama Theatre I saw Karel and Joseph Chapak’s “The Insect Play”, Nabokov’s “The Event”. I also saw Chekhov’s “Cherry Orchard”, “Sea-Gull”, “The Three Sister”. My dream is to see some Shakespeare’s plays in the original. Shakespeare wrote many plays, among them “Othello”, “Hamlet”, “Romeo and Juliet” and many others.
Sometimes I go to the National Opera of Ukraine. I like opera and ballet very much.
I want to tell you about my last visit to the Ivan Franko Drama Theatre. My friend bought two tickets for the play “Eneida”. It was a stage version of a well-known Ukrainian writer I. Kotlyarevskiy. There were brilliant actors and actresses in the cast. I admired everything: the wonderful scenery, marvelous acting, charming music. It was obvious that the play was a great success.
There are many different kinds of films: feature films, horror films, thrillers, concert films, films of plays, newsreels, cartoons, documentaries. There are silent films and “talkies”, ordinary and wide-screen films, black-and-white and color films.
Many years ago there were only silent, black-and-white films. Nowadays these films are part of history and we prefer sound films to silent ones, wide-screen to ordinary films, and color to black-and-white.
Usually we see films either in the cinema or on the TV and we probably see more and more various films on the TV. Still from time to time I go to the cinema. The last film I saw in the cinema was an American film. I prefer feature films and amusing comedies. It’s a pity the life is so difficult nowadays, and I want to relax a little, and sometimes even to laugh. But at the same time I am fond of true-to-life films describing the life of ordinary people, their feelings and problems. Such films move me deeply, and they always arouse feeling of sympathy or hatred for the heroes of these films. As a rule such films leave a deep and lasting impression upon me.
Very often we look forward to holidays to enjoy ourselves. As you know, the word “ holidays” comes from the words “holy day”. The point is that all the holidays were first religious festivals, but nowadays many of them have nothing to do with religion. Each country has holidays honoring important events in its history.
As we live in Ukraine, we have our own customs and traditions, holidays and festivals. A long-term dream of Ukrainian people came true on December 1.1991. More than 90% of the Ukrainian people voted for the independence of their country, Ukraine. It was proclaimed on the 24th of August, 1991 and Ukraine became a sovereign state. That is why Ukrainian people celebrate this day as the greatest national holiday.
The New Year Holiday is widely observed in Ukraine. The most common type of celebration is the New Year party, either a family party or one arranged by a group of young people. We decorate the New Year tree with toys and colored lights and when the clock strikes 12, we say to each other: “Happy New Year!”
Christmas Day is observed on the 7th of January. This holiday is of religious origin. Most people observe the tradition of going to church and having a tasty dinner.
On the 8th of March we celebrate the Women’s Day. It is a nice spring holiday when men give presents and flowers to their wives, sweethearts, girl-friends, sisters and daughters. Children congratulate their mothers on this holiday, or send them a holiday card with the best wishes.
The 9th of May is Victory Day, the holiday of victory over fascist invaders. People lay flowers to the war memorials, to the tombs of the people who died in the war. War veterans are greeted and there is a salute and fireworks in the evening.
I’m fond of reading books. I like to read novels and poems, plays and short stories, books on history, books about nature. I have many books let home and take out books at the library. My favourite writer is Jack London. He is an American writer. His life was very difficult. He was born in San Francisco in the family of impoverished farmer. In childhood he got to know misery and oppression. He began working at the age of eight. In the years that followed he did a man’s work, though he was only a boy. By the time he was twenty-two, he had lived more than most people did in fifty years. He had worked on ships and in factories; he had travelled across the ocean on ships as a sailor. In 1896 gold was discovered in Alaska, and together with thousands of other men, London rushed to the new territory. He brought no gold back with him, but he found something better than the yellow metal. The wonderful stories which he wrote on his return are based on the life he lived and on what he saw and heard in the frozen North. The collections of stories: “Children of the Frost”, “The son of the wolf” and “Love of Life” are gripping narratives of Man’s heroic struggle with Nature.
In his great works “The Iron Hell” and “Martin Eden”, London treats problems of the individual and society.
Jack London’s realism is combined with sympathy and love for Man in his struggle for life. It is this realism and humanism that made his writings as living and fresh today as they were at the beginning of the century.
When we have time for leisure, we usually need something that can amuse and interest us. There are several ways to do this.
At our leisure time we go in for sports, read books, listen to various concerts of modern and old music, new and old songs. Those who are fond of sports listen to or watch football or hockey matches. These are the most popular kinds of sports. There are a lot of fans among people.
If we want to go out, there are a lot of cinemas, theatres, museums, clubs in our country where we can spend free time. Many people are fond of collecting different things. Some of them collect old wins or stamps, other – pictures, postcards, drawings.
People have different hobbies. I am fond of painting. My favourite painter is Leonardo da Vinci. Everyone agrees that Leonardo da Vinci was one of the greatest of all painters. His painting “The Last Supper” is probably the most famous painting in the world. He was also a great inventor. He invented the wheel barrow and the military tank. Besides, Leonardo was a great scientist and engineer. He was also a poet, a musician, and a sculptor.
There is such beauty in his paintings that they are as hard to describe as beautiful music. The faces of his people are full of expression.
I like his paintings very much and have a big collection of reproductions of his pictures.
